Iron Age Hunsbury Bowl

Iron Age Hunsbury Bowl

Handcrafted Iron Age Vessel – Inspired by the Hunsbury Hill Find
Details

This replica Iron Age vessel is based on an original excavated from Hunsbury Hill, with surviving sherds now held in Northampton Museum. These fragments reveal a beautifully decorated surface, with designs carefully drawn into the clay—offering a glimpse into the artistry of its maker. This would have been a high-status item, more elaborately adorned than much of the pottery used at the time.

Materials
Smoke-fired terracotta

Dimensions
Height: Approx. 160 mm
Diameter: Approx. 245 mm

Firing

This vessel has been fired to emulate ancient firing conditions. The original pot would have been fired in an open wood fire, in direct contact with the fuel, resulting in natural variations in surface colour. However, the low temperatures of open firings produce relatively fragile pots. To strengthen this replica, it has been fired to a higher temperature using a specialist method that retains an authentic Iron Age appearance while improving durability.

Production

Each piece is handcrafted in Northumberland by Potted History, based on the original artefact. As with all our museum-quality replicas, this vessel has been made entirely by hand from natural clay, using tools that replicate those available to Iron Age potters. In keeping with the original, the decoration has been applied using an antler tool.

Health & Safety
Museum-Quality Replica: Made using authentic Roman tools and techniques.
Not food safe: This piece is unglazed and porous, meaning it absorbs liquids and does not meet modern health and safety standards for food use.
For display purposes only: While some enthusiasts use replicas for experimental archaeology, doing so is at your own risk.
Ancient users ensured food safety by heating their pots and contents above 70°C for at least 10 minutes to kill bacteria, with 100°C or higher offering additional protection.
