This replica Islamic terracotta lamp was created as part of an educational project to introduce school children to the Islamic world. It is based on early Islamic oil lamps from the 7th to 9th century AD.

Designed for functionality and authenticity, this lamp provides hours of light from a single wick when used correctly.

This museum-quality replica has been entirely handmade in Northumberland by Potted History, inspired by original artefacts.

• Hand-formed from natural clay, just as the originals would have been
• Created using replica tools based on those used by ancient potters
• Each piece is unique, with variations in surface colour and form due to the firing process

Health & Safety

Before using your lamp, please read the operating and safety instructions carefully.

• Burn ONLY OLIVE OIL in this lamp.
• DO NOT use modern lamp oil or other flammable liquids.
• Place the lamp on a stable, non-absorbent, non-flammable surface, far from any heat sources.
• Never blow out the flame—always snuff it out. Never use water to extinguish the flame.
• DO NOT move or pick up the lamp while it is lit.
• Ensure there are no flammable materials above or near the lamp.
• DO NOT leave the lamp unattended while lit.
• Keep the wick trimmed short to ensure a clean, bright flame and reduce fire risk.
• This lamp is not a toy – KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.
• Use at your own risk—we cannot take responsibility for accidents or injuries caused by use.

Instructions for Use

1. Adjust the wick before filling the lamp, ensuring it does not protrude above the edge of the wick aperture.
2. Fill the lamp with olive oil through the central filler hole. Allow the wick to soak for 1 hour before lighting for the first time.
3. Light the lamp. If the flame produces smoke, shorten the wick.
4. To adjust the wick: Use tweezers to gently turn and rewind the wick through the filler hole (never adjust while the lamp is lit or the wick is hot).
5. Extinguish the lamp by snuffing out the flame with a metal spoon.
