Bronze Age Beaker, Amesbury Archer, Find 6590

Bronze Age Beaker, Amesbury Archer, Find 6590

Handcrafted Replica Amesbury Archer Beaker

Details

This meticulously crafted replica is based on a remarkable Early Bronze Age beaker, originally found in the grave of the Amesbury Archer, dating to around 2300 BCE. This extraordinary burial was uncovered by archaeologists near Stonehenge and is regarded as one of the most significant discoveries of the period.

The original beaker, carefully decorated using a bone comb tool, is a stunning example of Beaker pottery. The grave of the Amesbury Archer contained not just this vessel but also a wealth of artefacts, including flints, knives, multiple pots, and gold hair ornaments—all suggesting that he was a man of great importance.

The presence of Beaker pottery in Britain coincides with the arrival of metalworking, marking a cultural shift at the dawn of the Bronze Age.

Historical Context

The Beaker phenomenon entered Britain from Continental Europe around 2500 BCE, at the same time as the first metals—gold and copper—began appearing in Britain.

This era is considered the transition from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age, a period of profound change. Some studies suggest that waves of migration from Europe brought new technologies, artistic traditions, and even new populations into Britain.

One of the most distinctive features of this period was the rise of highly decorated Beaker pottery, showcasing the skill and creativity of Bronze Age potters.

Materials

  • Smoke-fired terracotta

Dimensions

  • Height: Approx. 142 mm
  • Diameter: Approx. 153 mm

Production

As with all my Museum Quality Replicas, this pot has been handcrafted entirely by hand, using natural clay and replica tools based on those used by Bronze Age potters.

  • The decoration has been carefully applied using a bone comb tool, staying true to the techniques of the original potter.

Firing Process

To achieve an authentic appearance, this pot has been wood-fired, replicating ancient firing conditions.

  • The original beaker would have been fired in an open wood fire, in direct contact with the fuel, creating natural variations in surface colour.
  • However, the low temperatures of open firings result in weaker pottery, so this beaker has been fired at a slightly higher temperature to strengthen it while still maintaining an authentic prehistoric finish.

Health & Safety

This is a Museum Quality Replica and not intended for use as a drinking vessel.

  • If you require replica pots suitable for food or beverages, please contact me before purchasing.
