Egyptian Prehistoric Foot Bowl
Handcrafted Replica Predynastic Egyptian Bowl with Feet
Details
This replica bowl with feet is inspired by vessels from Egypt’s Predynastic period, a time spanning from the Palaeolithic to the Neolithic age, culminating in the rise of the First Dynasty. This fascinating era, generally dated from 6000 to 3150 BCE, saw the development of early Egyptian craftsmanship, including a diverse range of pottery vessels.
Among these is the mysterious "bowl with feet", a simple hand-formed bowl, made from Nile clay, set upon a pair of human-like feet—giving it a distinctive forward-tilted stance.
Theories About Its Purpose
While the exact function of these vessels remains unknown, one prevailing theory suggests they were used to hold offerings, with the forward tilt of the bowl symbolically "pouring" the offering.
This idea is further supported by the resemblance of the bowl with feet to the Egyptian hieroglyph for "to bring", which also conveys an act of offering or giving. However, due to the uncertain archaeological context in which these vessels were found, scholars have yet to reach a consensus on their true use.
