Iron Age Pedestal Urn - Painted

Iron Age Pedestal Urn - Painted

Handcrafted Iron Age Pedestal Urn – Inspired by the Prunay Vase
Details

This stunning pedestal urn is inspired by the Prunay Vase, a beautiful artefact now held in the Iron Age collection at the British Museum. Originally crafted in Iron Age Gaul (modern-day France) around 400 BC, the original vessel was created by a highly skilled potter of the La Tène I culture. This finely made, wheel-thrown piece was a high-status object, reserved for Iron Age patrons who could afford such a luxurious and decorative item.

To replicate the distinctive surface of the original, we’ve painstakingly burnished the clay by hand, polishing it with a smoothing tool to achieve a rich, lustrous finish. The elegant decoration was then painted using an organic pigment and fired into the surface—just as it would have been over two thousand years ago.

The result is an exquisitely elegant vessel, timeless in its form and strikingly modern in its aesthetic.

Materials
Earthenware, terracotta with reduction-fired burnished finish

Dimensions
Height: Approx. 300 mm
Diameter: Approx. 195 mm

Production

Each piece is handcrafted in Northumberland by Potted History, based on Iron Age artefacts. It has been wood-fired using methods to accurately replicate the conditions of the original Iron Age firing, creating an authentic look and feel. This process results in natural variations in surface colour and texture, giving every piece its own unique character.

Please note: Each pot is one of a kind. You may not receive the exact piece shown in the photos, and colouration may vary.
