A spindle whorl is a small weight with a central hole, traditionally placed on a wooden drop spindle. The weight of the whorl gives the spindle momentum when spun, allowing fibres to be twisted into yarn—a vital step in creating textiles.

Drop spindles have been used since prehistoric times and are still used today in many parts of the world. These simple tools helped clothe communities for generations, with their essential form remaining largely unchanged across time and cultures.

We have created our spindle whorls with care and reverence, drawing inspiration from examples unearthed during archaeological excavations and now displayed in museums worldwide. Each one is based on authentic Iron Age designs, reflecting the shapes and sizes used by ancient craftspeople.

As with all of our Museum Quality Replicas, this item has been handmade in Northumberland using traditional techniques and tools inspired by those used in antiquity.
