Anglo Saxon Urn, Buckelurne
Handcrafted Replica Anglo-Saxon Buckelurne – Inspired by a British Museum Artefact
Details
This museum-quality replica is based on an Anglo-Saxon Buckelurne, dating from the 5th–6th Century AD. It follows the Germanic pottery style, featuring hand-modelled decorative bosses, incised lines, and a continuous twisted ‘rope’ band—all crafted just as the original potter would have done.
This urn has been burnished to enhance the stunning variations in colour created during smoke firing. The original vessel was discovered in an Anglo-Saxon cemetery near the Romano-British settlement of Sandy, Bedfordshire, and is now part of the British Museum’s collection.
Materials
- Smoke-fired terracotta
Dimensions
- Height: Approx. 220 mm
- Diameter: Approx. 240 mm
Production
We have meticulously handcrafted this piece in our Northumberland studio, using techniques and tools that faithfully replicate those of the original Anglo-Saxon potters.
- The urn has been wood-fired in direct contact with fuel, creating an authentic surface colouration reminiscent of the original Anglo-Saxon firing process.
- The surface has been sealed with natural beeswax, mirroring the protective techniques identified in historical residue analysis.
As with all handmade replicas, each piece is unique, and slight variations in colour, texture, and surface finish may occur due to the firing process.
