This museum-quality replica faithfully emulates an Anglo-Saxon Buckelurne, dating from the 5th–6th Century AD. Crafted in the Germanic pottery style, it features carefully hand-modelled decorative lines that mirror the techniques of the original Anglo-Saxon potters.

The urn has been burnished to enhance its surface and highlight the stunning blackened finish, created through traditional smoke firing techniques. The potter’s marks—subtle evidence of the craftsmanship behind the piece—add an authentic connection to the past, reflecting the handmade nature of Anglo-Saxon pottery.

The original urn is on display in the British Museum.

Production

We have meticulously handcrafted this piece in our Northumberland studio, using tools and techniques that remain true to Anglo-Saxon craftsmanship.

• The urn has been wood-fired in direct contact with fuel, emulating the traditional Anglo-Saxon firing process.
• During the final stage of firing, it was smothered with wood, starving it of oxygen and producing its characteristic deep black finish.
• The surface has been sealed with natural beeswax, a method identified in historical residue analysis.

As with all handmade replicas, each piece is unique, and slight variations in colour, texture, and surface finish may occur due to the firing process.
