Collared Urn Wilsford
Handcrafted Replica Bronze Age Collared Urn – Inspired by the Wilsford G7 Find
Details
This museum-quality replica is based on what is widely considered one of the finest vessels in the Wiltshire Museum, Devizes.
The original urn was discovered in Bowl Barrow Wilsford G7, part of the Normanton Down Group, within the Stonehenge Landscape, near Amesbury. It was excavated by William Cunnington in 1808 and was found alongside a primary inhumation (at feet).
This urn features impressively detailed decoration, including bands of whip-cord impressions (sometimes called “maggot marks”), chevrons, and cross-hatching, all bordered by deep double lines, likely applied using an antler point. Two cord-impressed lines around the inner rim complete the striking collared design.
The original vessel is part of the permanent collection at Wiltshire Museum.
Materials
- Smoke-fired terracotta
Dimensions
- Height: Approx. 225 mm
- Diameter: Approx. 180 mm
Production
This handcrafted replica has been made using authentic Bronze Age techniques and archaeological evidence. The decoration has been applied using lime bast cord, whip-cord, bone, and antler points, just as it would have been by Bronze Age potters over 3,500 years ago.
The urn has been wood-fired to replicate ancient firing conditions, and its exterior has been finished with beeswax, creating a subtle sheen, much like the originals.
This is a Museum Quality Replica, intended for display purposes only. If you require a functional replica for use with food or beverages, please contact us before purchasing.
Firing Process
This urn has been fired using a carefully controlled process to achieve an authentic appearance.
The original vessel would have been fired in an open wood fire, in direct contact with the fuel, resulting in surface colour variations. However, open-firing produces relatively fragile ceramics, so this replica has been fired at a slightly higher temperature to enhance durability while maintaining an authentic look and feel.
