Anglo Saxon Urn, Loveden Hill
Handcrafted Replica Anglo-Saxon Loveden Hill Cremation Urn
Details
This museum-quality replica is based on an Anglo-Saxon cremation urn excavated from Loveden Hill, Lincolnshire, a site rich in Anglo-Saxon burial artefacts.
The urn is impressive in stature and beautifully made, serving as a grand resting place for the individual whose cremated remains were carefully placed within it over 1,400 years ago.
This design features:
- 16 bosses and 16 decorative panels encircling the urn’s body.
- 14 panels with incised line decorations.
- 2 panels with intricate stamped decoration, created using three distinct stamping tools.
The significance of these unique stamp designs remains unknown—perhaps they were a potter’s mark or held personal significance to the individual buried within the urn.
Archaeological Context
This urn is one of many stunning cremation urns discovered at the Loveden Hill cemetery, a major burial site in Anglo-Saxon Britain.
- Initial excavations began in the 1920s, with further digs conducted in 1955, 1963, and 1972.
- Archaeologists uncovered nearly 2,000 burials, mostly cremations, but also some inhumations with grave goods.
- The cemetery was used for an extended period, with burials likely dating from the 6th or 7th century AD.
Despite extensive excavations, dating remains difficult due to the long history of use at the site. However, the distinctive style of this urn suggests it belongs to the later Anglo-Saxon period.
