Anglo Saxon Urn, Sewerby Hall
Handcrafted Replica Anglo-Saxon Sewerby Urn
Details
This museum-quality replica is based on an Anglo-Saxon urn excavated from Sewerby, East Riding of Yorkshire, one of the most significant burial sites of the Anglo-Saxon period.
The Sewerby cemetery is a pagan burial site, among the earliest of its kind, dating back to the 6th–7th centuries AD. As was customary in Anglo-Saxon funerary practices, a wealth of objects was buried alongside the deceased, offering invaluable insight into early Anglo-Saxon life, society, and craftsmanship.
Excavations at Sewerby uncovered a remarkable collection of artefacts, including:
- Pottery
- Jewellery
- Weapons
These discoveries have contributed significantly to our understanding of Anglo-Saxon culture and are now housed in the Sewerby Hall collection.
Materials
- Terracotta, reduction fired
Dimensions
- Height: Approx. 190 mm
- Diameter: Approx. 170 mm
Production
This urn has been handcrafted in our Northumberland studio, using historical tools and techniques to ensure an authentic finish.
- Each piece is handmade following the methods of Anglo-Saxon potters.
- The reduction firing process emulates the conditions used in early medieval pottery, ensuring each piece has unique variations in surface colour and texture.
- As a handcrafted item, no two pieces are identical, making your urn a one-of-a-kind creation.
