Roman Face Flagon, Coventina's Well
Handcrafted Replica Roman Face Flagon – Inspired by a Votive Offering to Coventina
Details
This handcrafted Roman face flagon is inspired by an original discovered at Coventina’s Well, a sacred site on Hadrian’s Wall, Northumberland. Coventina was a Romano-British goddess associated with water, wells, and springs, believed to correspond with the Roman goddess Minerva.
At Brocolitia, a walled shrine was built to contain the overflow from a natural spring, creating Coventina’s Well. Within this well, numerous votive offerings were uncovered, including this remarkable face flagon, which was found almost intact.
The shrine sits beside a Mithraeum—a temple dedicated to the god Mithras. It was common practice in Roman Britain to group religious shrines, reinforcing the connection between different spiritual traditions.
This flagon is a faithful replica of the original, honouring both the craftsmanship of Roman potters and the mystical history of Coventina’s shrine.
Materials
- Earthenware clay
- Thin glaze finish
Dimensions
- Height: Approx. 300 mm
- Diameter: Approx. 174 mm
Production
Each museum-quality replica is handcrafted in Northumberland by Potted History, based on the original artefact. The flagon has been fired at temperatures between 800°C and 1000°C, replicating Roman pottery techniques as closely as possible.
This traditional process naturally results in variations in surface colour and texture, ensuring that each piece is unique—just like the original Roman finds.
Health & Safety
This museum-quality replica has been made using authentic Roman tools and techniques. As an unglazed and porous vessel, it will absorb liquids and flavours over time, much like the original flagons.
- Not food safe: Due to its porous nature, this vessel does not meet modern health and safety standards for food use.
- For display and experimental archaeology purposes only: While some enthusiasts use these replicas for experimental archaeology, doing so is at your own risk.
- The Romans ensured food safety by heating their pots and contents to over 70°C for at least 10 minutes to kill bacteria, with 100°C or higher offering additional protection.
