Greek Masked Actor
Handcrafted Replica Ancient Greek Theatre Figurine – The Satirical Politician
Details
During the Golden Age of Athens, the art of theatre flourished. Actors, donning grotesque masks, performed satirical comedies and gruesome tragedies in open-air theatres throughout the Greek world.
Among the many artefacts discovered from this exciting era, a notable find includes fourteen theatre figurines, said to have been found together in a burial in Attica.
These small statues represent the varied characters of classical Greek theatre, and this particular fellow is based on a figure reputed to be impersonating a politician. (I make no comment on any resemblance he may, or may not, have to modern politicians!)
With his trousers missing and his nether regions pulled upwards with a string, he would have originally been painted in bright, garish colours. Dating from the late 5th to early 4th century BCE, examples of this figurine style have been found across Southern Russia to Spain—a testament to its widespread appeal and influence.
