Greek Antefix
Handcrafted Replica Greek Gorgon Antefix – Inspired by Ancient Roof Decorations
Details
Grotesque faces of mythical beings and deities were a popular motif for terracotta antefixes in Ancient Greece. These decorative roof tiles served both a functional and protective role, covering the exposed ends of roofing tiles to shield the wooden structure of buildings from the elements.
This gurning, open-mouthed design has been carefully painted to emphasise the grotesque features, reflecting the ancient belief that such imagery warded off evil spirits. It is designed to represent one of the three Gorgon sisters—Stheno, Euryale, and Medusa. Medusa, the most fearsome of the three, was said to have the power to turn any human to stone with a single look.
To make this museum-quality replica easier to display, we have removed the fixing lug that would have originally been used to attach the antefix to a roof. However, if you require a version with the fixing lug intact, please get in touch for a custom quote.
