Greek Spindle Whorl

Greek Spindle Whorl

Handcrafted Replica Ancient Greek Spindle Whorl – Inspired by Traditional Spinning & Weaving

Details

To the ancient Greeks, spinning and weaving were considered vital feminine attributes, and good wives were often depicted engaged in these tasks. The most famous example is Penelope, the faithful wife of Odysseus, who used her loom to delay her many suitors during her husband's long absence.

It was not only mortal women who were known for their fine spinning. Such was its importance in daily life that goddesses, demigoddesses, and nymphs were also depicted spinning and weaving. Among them, the most notable was Athena (Minerva to the Romans), the Goddess of women's handicrafts, often portrayed in ancient art spinning or weaving.

As the patron deity of Athens, Athena was honoured each June during the Panathenaia festival, where spinning and weaving played a vital role. The festival's best spinners and weavers were chosen to craft an exquisite peplos, which would be used to dress the statue of Athena in the Erechtheion.
