A Day In Rome Samian Ware, Dr30
Handcrafted Replica Samian Ware Bowl – Dragendorff 30
Details
There is something unmistakably Roman about the iconic Samian Ware. Sherds of this luxurious pottery have been discovered throughout the Roman world, a testament to its immense popularity and widespread distribution across the empire.
Mass-produced in Gaul by skilled potters using locally sourced clay, Samian Ware was highly prized for its distinctive glossy red finish. These elegant bowls were so valuable to their owners that examples have been found along Hadrian's Wall with names scratched onto the surface—a clear sign that these possessions were simply too precious to lose.
This striking replica features detailed relief scenes depicting some of the Romans' favourite pastimes, including gladiatorial contests, hunting, flute playing, and… well, let’s just say some of their more intimate activities. (Be sure to check the images—but maybe not around the kids!)
- Form Type: Dragendorff 30
Materials
- Terracotta with a red slip finish
Dimensions
- Height: Approx. 150 mm
- Diameter: Approx. 150 mm
Production
Each piece is handcrafted in Northumberland by Potted History, using traditional tools and techniques to ensure historical accuracy. This bowl has been fired between 800°C & 1000°C, replicating the original Roman firing methods.
As with authentic Roman ceramics, the firing process naturally results in unique variations in surface colour and texture, making each piece one of a kind.
Health & Safety
- Museum-Quality Replica: Made using authentic Roman tools and techniques.
- Not food safe: This piece is unglazed and porous, meaning it absorbs liquids and does not meet modern health and safety standards for food use.
- For display purposes only: While some enthusiasts use replicas for experimental archaeology, doing so is at your own risk.
- Ancient users ensured food safety by heating their pots and contents above 70°C for at least 10 minutes to kill bacteria, with 100°C or higher offering additional protection.
