Anglo-Saxon Bowl, Selmeston

Anglo-Saxon Bowl, Selmeston

Handcrafted Replica Selmeston Anglo-Saxon Vessel

Details

This sculptural Anglo-Saxon vessel is a replica of an original artefact discovered at Selmeston, Sussex, a site once home to a thriving Anglo-Saxon community.

The name Selmeston is believed to derive from the Anglo-Saxon words ‘Sige helm’ (Victory Helmet) and ‘tun’ (settlement), suggesting a place of historical significance. Among the discoveries at this remarkable site was a vast Anglo-Saxon cemetery containing around 200 graves, making it one of the largest burial sites in Southern England.

Excavations date the site to the 5th to 7th centuries, with artefacts including spears, daggers, swords, brooches, and pottery vessels, many of which exhibit unique and unusual designs. This vessel is a testament to the craftsmanship and artistic appreciation of the Anglo-Saxon people who once lived here.
