Medieval Three Legged Cooking Pot, Pipkin

Handcrafted Medieval Three-Legged Cooking Pot

Details

This is a replica of a classic three-legged medieval cooking pot, designed for practicality and resilience. The tripod form allowed it to stand steady over open flames or uneven ground, making it a staple in both simple homes and bustling castle kitchens.

Pots like this were not just utilitarian—they were part of the heartbeat of daily life. Whether nourishing a family or fuelling a feast, they helped shape the flavours and rhythms of medieval existence.

Materials
Grogged earthenware with green glaze

Dimensions
Height: Approx. 330 mm
Diameter: Approx. 135 mm
Handle Length: Approx. 230 mm

This piece has been handmade in Northumberland by Potted History, based on an original medieval artefact. Health & Safety
Museum-Quality Replica: Made using authentic historical tools and techniques.
Not food safe: Although glazed in areas, this vessel is made from earthenware, which is naturally porous. Over time, it will absorb the flavours and oils of any food or liquid it comes into contact with. It does not meet modern health and safety standards for food or drink use.
For display purposes only: While some enthusiasts do use replicas like this for experimental archaeology or historical cooking, they do so at their own risk.
In medieval times, people ensured hygiene and safety by heating pots and their contents to over 70°C for at least 10 minutes to kill bacteria, with temperatures of 100°C or more offering even greater protection.
