Torksey Spouted Pitcher, Viking

Torksey Spouted Pitcher, Viking

Handcrafted Replica Viking Torksey Ware Pitcher

Details

When you think of the Vikings, images of warships and fierce battles often come to mind. However, many Vikings chose to settle in the British Isles, returning to their farming roots. Their arrival sparked a revolution in pottery production, reintroducing the potter’s wheel and mass production on a scale not seen since the Roman period.

Excavations at Torksey, Lincolnshire, uncovered stunning pottery examples from this time, leading to the naming of Torksey Ware. However, this type of pottery has also been discovered at other sites across the British Isles.

The distinctive ribbed decoration on this piece is created by applying strips of clay to the pot’s surface and then pressing dimples with the fingers. This museum-quality replica has been finished with a black glaze, a rare and high-status feature at the time, as most pitchers of this period would have remained unglazed.

Materials

  • Grogged earthenware with black glaze

Dimensions

  • Height: Approx. 160 mm
  • Diameter: Approx. 160 mm

Production

As with all our Museum Quality Replicas, this pot has been made entirely by hand in Northumberland by Potted History, based on an original artefact.

  • Wheel-thrown, just as the original Viking potters would have crafted it.
  • Finished with a honey glaze to emulate the appearance of the original glaze used on surviving examples.

Health & Safety

This is a Museum Quality Replica, made using the tools and techniques that Viking potters would have used during the early medieval period.

  • Like the original, this vessel is not fully glazed, meaning the surface remains porous. This allows the pot to absorb moisture and flavours over time, much like its historical counterparts.
  • As a result, it does not meet modern food safety standards, and we do not recommend using this pot for storing, serving, or consuming food or drink.
  • If used with liquids, the unglazed areas will absorb moisture, which could lead to discolouration of the pot over time.
  • For display purposes only: While this piece is an authentic and historically accurate replica, it is intended for decorative use rather than functional purposes.
