Materials
Terracotta with black slip finish
Dimensions
Height: Approx. 100 mm
Diameter: Approx. 110 mm
Width (including handles): Approx. 170 mm
Production
This museum-quality replica has been entirely handmade in Northumberland by Potted History, inspired by original Ancient Greek wine cups.
- Handcrafted using traditional techniques
- Fired to over 1,000°C, replicating the authentic ancient process
- Each piece is unique, with natural variations in surface colour and texture, just as seen in original Greek pottery
Health & Safety
This museum-quality replica was made using authentic Ancient Greek tools and techniques.
- This is an unglazed pot with a porous surface. Although the black slip finish provides some level of waterproofing, the cup may still absorb the flavours of liquids or foods stored within it, which could influence future contents.
- However, this also means that the pot does not meet modern food safety standards, so we do not advise using it for drinking or storing foodstuffs.
- In ancient times, Greek drinkers and cooks relied on high temperatures to eliminate bacteria from their pottery.
- Heating to over 70°C for at least 10 minutes would have killed most harmful bacteria.
- Boiling at 100°C would have been even more effective.
- If you choose to use this item for Experimental Archaeology, you do so at your own risk.
