Diana and the Beasts Saiman Bowl
Handcrafted Replica Roman Samian Ware Bowl – Depicting Diana and Wild Animals
Details
This stunning replica of a Roman Samian Ware bowl from around the 2nd century AD features intricate relief decoration depicting Diana, the goddess of hunting, and various wild animals. Samian Ware, also known as terra sigillata, was the finest tableware of the Roman world, prized for its glossy red finish and intricate moulded designs.
The original of this bowl would have been crafted in Gaul (modern-day France) before being traded across the Roman Empire. This replica has been made using the same traditional techniques employed by Roman potters nearly 1,900 years ago.
Production
Recreating this museum-quality replica involved following the exact historical methods used by ancient Samian Ware workshops:
- A set of punches replicating the original Roman designs was hand-carved from fine terracotta clay.
- The decoration was imprinted into a bowl mould, which was then fired to 1000°C.
- The mould was mounted on a potter's wheel, where the bowl was formed inside it while spinning at speed.
- Once partially dried, the bowl was removed from the mould, a foot ring was added, and it was left to dry further.
- The bowl was then dipped in terra sigillata slip, a fine liquid clay that gives it its characteristic rich red colour and glossy finish.
- Finally, after a further week of drying, the bowl was fired to nearly 1100°C, ensuring both strength and authenticity.
Materials
- Terracotta with a red slip finish
Dimensions
- Approx. 190 mm diameter
- Approx. 120 mm tall
Health & Safety
This museum-quality replica has been made using authentic Roman tools and techniques. As an unglazed and porous vessel, it will absorb liquids and flavours over time, much like original Roman pottery.
- Not food safe: Due to its porous nature, this vessel does not meet modern health and safety standards for food use.
- For display and experimental archaeology purposes only: While some enthusiasts use these replicas for experimental archaeology, doing so is at your own risk.
- Roman cooking practices: Ancient cooks relied on applying sufficient heat to their pots and contents to kill bacteria. Heating to over 70°C for at least 10 minutes would have eliminated most disease-causing bacteria, while 100°C or higher would have provided further protection.
