Dolphin Antefix

Dolphin Antefix

Handcrafted Replica Roman Antefix – Dolphin Motif

Details

In ancient Rome, antefixes were used to conceal the ends of roof tiles along the edges of buildings. They served both a functional and decorative purpose, protecting the wooden structures beneath from the elements while also displaying symbols of divine protection.

Antefixes were often adorned with images of gods, deities, or military insignia, acting as a statement of protection and a ward against evil.

This replica antefix has been specially adapted for modern display:

  • A hole has been added to allow for wall mounting.
  • The traditional fixing lug has been removed, as this feature was originally designed for affixing to a roof.
  • If you require a version with the fixing lug, please contact us for a quote.

Symbolism of the Dolphin

Dolphins appear frequently in both Greek and Roman mythology, often associated with gods and goddesses such as:

  • Aphrodite (Venus) – the goddess of love and beauty
  • Dionysus (Bacchus) – the god of wine and revelry
  • Eros (Cupid) – the god of desire
  • Neptune (Poseidon) – the ruler of the seas
  • Palemon – the protector of sailors

This particular original antefix was discovered in Exeter and is now held in the collection of Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales.
