Egyptian Monochrome Canopic Jar

Egyptian Monochrome Canopic Jar

Handcrafted Replica Egyptian Canopic Jar – Inspired by the 25th Dynasty (746-653 BC)

Details

When you think of ancient Egyptian artefacts, canopic jars are likely one of the first things that come to mind.

Traditionally made in sets of four, these jars were essential for the deceased in ancient Egypt. Their varied designs, materials, and colour combinations reflected different periods and styles, but the most well-known examples feature lids shaped as the four Sons of Horus, protective deities entrusted with safeguarding the body's vital organs.

These jars played a crucial role in burial rituals throughout most periods of ancient Egyptian history, serving as containers for the mummified organs of the deceased.

Each of the Sons of Horus was responsible for protecting a specific internal organ:

  • Imsety (Human-headed) – Guardian of the liver
  • Hapi (Baboon-headed) – Protector of the lungs
  • Duamutef (Jackal-headed) – Responsible for the stomach
  • Qebehsenuef (Falcon-headed) – Preserver of the intestines

The intricate hand-painted decoration on these jars is inspired by a 25th Dynasty set (c. 746-653 BC) from the Egyptian collection at the British Museum.
