Egyptian Osiris Brick
Handcrafted Replica Egyptian Osiris Brick (Germinating Bed) – Inspired by the Khoiak Festival
Details
Osiris Bricks, also known as Osiris Germinating Beds, were used in rituals associated with the Osirian Festival of Khoiak and have been found in tombs where the deceased aligned themselves with Osiris.
These bricks contained seeds such as grain, cereal, or linen, which were thickly sown into the carved area representing Osiris' effigy. The soil was loosely packed over the seeds and kept moist until the seeds germinated and grew.
Once the seedlings reached the desired size, watering ceased, and the plants wilted and died—symbolising Osiris' power as the god of regeneration and ruler of the dead. This ritual reflected death, rebirth, and the cycle of life, key themes in ancient Egyptian religious beliefs.
The effigy of Osiris is depicted in his traditional form:
- Wrapped as a mummy
- Wearing the tall crown of Upper Egypt, adorned with ostrich plumes
- Holding the crook and flail, symbols of kingship and divine authority
