When you think of ancient Egyptian artefacts, canopic jars are among the most iconic.
Traditionally made in sets of four, these jars were essential for the deceased in ancient Egypt. Their varied designs, materials, and colour combinations reflected different periods and styles, but the most well-known examples feature lids shaped as the four Sons of Horus, protective deities entrusted with safeguarding the body's vital organs.
These jars played a crucial role in burial rituals throughout most periods of ancient Egyptian history, serving as containers for the mummified organs of the deceased.
Each of the Sons of Horus was responsible for protecting a specific internal organ:
- Imsety (Human-headed) – Guardian of the liver
- Hapi (Baboon-headed) – Protector of the lungs
- Duamutef (Jackal-headed) – Responsible for the stomach
- Qebehsenuef (Falcon-headed) – Preserver of the intestines
The intricate hand-painted decoration on these jars is inspired by a 25th Dynasty set (c. 746-653 BC) from the Egyptian collection at the British Museum.

- Height: Approx. 300 mm (based on the tallest jar, Duamutef)
- Width: Approx. 100 mm
Production
This museum-quality replica has been entirely handmade in Northumberland by Potted History, inspired by original Egyptian artefacts.
- Hand-formed from natural clay, as the originals would have been
- Fired between 800°C - 1,000°C to replicate authentic ancient pottery techniques
- Hand-painted, meaning each piece has slight variations, just as seen in original artefacts
