Egyptian Ushabti Figure - Medium
Handcrafted Replica Egyptian Ushabti – Servant of the Afterlife
Details
Ushabti is one of several names given to these common Ancient Egyptian funerary figures, also known as Shabti or Shawabti (with various spelling variations).
The use of Ushabti figures began in the Old Kingdom of Egypt (c. 2600-2100 BCE) and continued throughout Egyptian history. These figures are among the most frequently found artefacts from this period, appearing in most Egyptian exhibitions and museum displays.
Made in various materials and sizes—some even life-sized—these figures were produced in large numbers and placed in the tombs of the deceased to serve as workers or servants for their masters in the afterlife.
Many Ushabti figures were inscribed with hieroglyphic texts, often containing short spells from the Book of the Dead—the sacred funerary text designed to guide the deceased on their journey into the afterlife. However, many examples today appear without inscriptions, as the writing has often not withstood the test of time.
