Epyptian Nile Boat Model
Handcrafted Replica Roman Toy Boat – A Glimpse into Ancient Play
Details
This charming replica model is based on an artefact from the 1st to 2nd century CE, originally made in Egypt. During this period, Egypt was a province of the Roman Empire, and its culture was heavily influenced by Roman rule.
This detailed little vessel provides valuable insight into the construction of ancient boats. It features:
- A high, knobbed, and pointed stern with a more rounded bow
- A rounded double-arched cabin, likely representing a reed structure
- A ladder-patterned crosspiece in front of the cabin
- Impressions near the bow and stern that may depict hatchways
- A flattish bottom, suggesting it was designed for navigating shallow waters
A vent hole is cut into the front of the cabin—this was likely a practical feature to ensure the boat survived the firing process, but it may also represent a door. Additionally, a pierced hole at the bow suggests that this could have been a pull-along toy, possibly the Hot Wheels of the ancient world!
The original artefact is part of the Roman collection at the British Museum.
