Garum Flask / Amphora

Garum Flask / Amphora

Handcrafted Replica Roman Garum Bottle – A Taste of Ancient Rome

Details

Garum was a popular condiment during the Roman era, used in a vast array of recipes. Although recipes varied between producers, the fundamental process remained the same—fermenting fish and salt to create a rich, savoury sauce.

One of the best-known varieties was Gari Flos Scombri (Flower of Garum), which was packaged in distinctive, slim, single-handled flasks and transported across the empire. This iconic bottle was so widely recognised that it even appears in a mosaic discovered in Pompeii.

And if you’re not already tempted by this fishy delicacy, let Roman writer and scholar Pliny describe it for you:

"Consisting of the guts of fish and the other parts that would otherwise be considered refuse; these are soaked in salt, so that garum is really liquor from the putrefaction of these matters." (Yum!)

Sauce not included.

Materials

Earthenware clay

Dimensions

Height: Approx. 275 mm
Diameter: Approx. 100 mm

Production

This museum-quality replica has been entirely handmade in Northumberland by Potted History, inspired by original ancient artefacts.

  • Handcrafted using traditional techniques
  • Wood-fired
  • Fired between 800°C - 1,000°C, using the same techniques as Roman potters nearly 2,000 years ago
  • Each piece is unique, with variations in surface colour and texture, just as seen in original Roman pottery

Health & Safety

This is a museum-quality replica, created using authentic Roman-era tools and techniques. As this is an unglazed pot with a porous surface, it will absorb some of the flavours of stored food, adding depth to future dishes. However, it does not meet modern health and safety standards, so we do not advise using it for food storage.

The Romans relied on high temperatures to kill bacteria in their cooking. Heating food to over 70°C for at least 10 minutes would have eliminated most harmful bacteria, while boiling at 100°C would have been even more effective.
