Greek Two Handled Cup
Handcrafted Replica Ancient Greek Drinking Cup – Inspired by 5th-Century Athenian Pottery
Details
Beautifully decorated Ancient Greek drinking cups are a common sight in museum displays, highlighting how the Greek love of art extended into even the most practical objects. These highly decorated vessels were not just for display—they were crafted for everyday use, bringing elegance and artistry to daily life.
This replica cup is inspired by pottery dated to the 5th century BCE, discovered in the Athenian Agora. The design reflects the grace and craftsmanship of Ancient Greek potters, who seamlessly blended functionality and aesthetic beauty.
This item is unglazed, just as the originals would have been. If you would like to use it functionally, we can arrange to have it glazed upon request for a small charge of £5. However, please note that this cup is made from earthenware clay, which, even when glazed, will not be as durable as modern stoneware ceramics. It will require gentle hand washing and may be prone to chipping. Additionally, glazing will alter the appearance of the cup, meaning it will no longer retain the authentic look of an ancient Greek artefact.
Materials
Terracotta with natural pigment decoration
Dimensions
Height: Approx. 130 mm
Diameter: Approx. 110 mm

Production
This museum-quality replica has been entirely handmade in Northumberland by Potted History, inspired by original Ancient Greek drinking cups.
- Handcrafted from natural clay
- Created using replicas of ancient tools, just as the original makers would have done
- Fired using traditional methods, resulting in natural variations in colour and texture
- Each piece is unique, meaning your cup will be one of a kind
Health & Safety
This museum-quality replica was made using authentic Ancient Greek tools and techniques.
- This is an unglazed pot with a porous surface, meaning it will absorb some of the flavours of liquids or foods stored within it, enhancing future contents.
- However, this also means that the pot does not meet modern food safety standards, so we do not advise using it for drinking or storing foodstuffs.
- In ancient times, Greek drinkers and cooks relied on high temperatures to eliminate bacteria in their pottery.
- Heating to over 70°C for at least 10 minutes would have killed most harmful bacteria.
- Boiling at 100°C would have been even more effective.
- If you choose to use this item for Experimental Archaeology, you do so at your own risk.
