Greek Pan Statue / Roman Faunus

Greek Pan Statue / Roman Faunus

Details

The divine touched every part of Greek and Roman life, and the deity responsible for watching over shepherds was the free-spirited mountain and forest-dwelling Pan. Worshipped predominantly between 800 BCE and AD 400, Pan is distinctive for his human torso, goat legs, and horns sprouting from his head.

Said to be the son of Hermes and the forest nymph Penelope, his parentage varies across different myths, with some legends offering alternative versions of his lineage.

Pan is deeply associated with music and dancing and is often credited with inventing the panpipes. According to myth, he crafted the first panpipes from hollow reeds—which had once been the nymph Syrinx. To escape Pan’s unwanted advances, Syrinx was transformed into reeds by Gaia, and in his grief, Pan cut the reeds and fashioned them into an instrument, ensuring that her voice would sing forever through his music.

Pan was also known for his mischievous nature, often sneaking up on and frightening travellers—which led to the origin of the word ‘panic’. Thankfully, we now have soothing panpipe music to counteract his alarming surprises!
