Greek Votive Tortoise
Handcrafted Replica Ancient Greek Tortoise Votive – Inspired by the Shefton Collection
Details
This fabulous replica of a tortoise votive is based on an original artefact from the Shefton Collection at the Great North Museum. We first created this figure as part of our collaboration with the museum, which provided detailed images and dimensions to ensure an accurate reproduction.
Votive offerings were a common aspect of daily life and worship in ancient times. Sherds of votive figures—ranging from ceramic body parts to food and animals—have been discovered in vast numbers across the ancient world.
These delightful objects were left at temples and religious sites as offerings to the gods. It is believed they were placed to:
- Seek divine intervention and gain favour with a specific deity
- Express gratitude after receiving divine assistance
- Serve as funerary objects or children’s toys
This particular type of votive dates from the 5th-4th century BCE and reflects the rich religious and cultural traditions of Ancient Greece.
