Hercules And Lions Samian Bowl

Hercules And Lions Samian Bowl

Handcrafted Replica Roman Samian Ware Bowl – Hercules & the Nemean Lion

Details

This stunning replica Roman Samian Ware bowl, dating to around the second century AD, depicts Hercules battling the Nemean Lion. It has been crafted using the same hand-forming techniques that would have been employed by Roman potters nearly 1,900 years ago.

Production

The process of recreating this highly decorated Samian Ware bowl began with the meticulous hand-carving of punches, matching the exact designs and dimensions used by ancient Roman mould makers. These fine terracotta punches, once fired, were used to impress the intricate design into the interior of a bowl mould.

This mould was then fired to 1000°C, mounted onto a potter’s wheel, and used to form the final bowl, mirroring the methods of Samian Ware workshops in Gaul during the first, second, and third centuries AD.

After an initial drying period, the bowl shrinks slightly, allowing it to be removed from the mould. It is then refined on the wheel, where its foot ring is added. Once dry, the pot is dipped into terra sigillata slip (liquid clay), which gives Samian Ware its distinctive colour and sheen when fired.

The final firing takes place at nearly 1100°C, ensuring both durability and an authentic finish.

Materials

  • Terracotta with a red slip finish

Dimensions

  • Diameter: Approx. 175 mm
  • Height: Approx. 110 mm

Health & Safety

This museum-quality replica has been made using authentic Roman tools and techniques. As an unglazed and porous vessel, it will absorb liquids and flavours over time, much like original Roman pottery.

  • Not food safe: Due to its porous nature, this vessel does not meet modern health and safety standards for food use.
  • For display and experimental archaeology purposes only: While some enthusiasts use these replicas for experimental archaeology, doing so is at your own risk.
  • The Romans ensured food safety by heating their pots and contents to over 70°C for at least 10 minutes to kill bacteria, with 100°C or higher offering additional protection.
