Lion Antefix
Handcrafted Roman Antefix – Decorative Roof Tile End
Details
In ancient Rome, antefixes were used to conceal the ends of curved roof tiles that lined the edge of a building’s roof. These terracotta pieces served a practical function—protecting the wooden parts of the roof from the elements—as well as a symbolic and decorative purpose.
Often crafted with images of gods, deities, or military insignia, antefixes acted as protective guardians, boldly signalling to the outside world that the home was defended by powerful forces and warding off evil.
This replica has been made without the mounting lug typically used to attach an antefix to a roof, making it easier to display in a modern setting. If you would prefer a version with the fixing lug included, please contact us for a quote.
Materials
Terracotta with natural pigments
Dimensions
Height: Approx. 215 mm
Length: Approx. 170 mm
Depth: Approx. 35 mm
Production
This piece has been handcrafted in Northumberland by Potted History, based on an original Roman artefact. It has been fired to a temperature between 800°C and 1000°C, using techniques that closely replicate those of Roman potters from nearly two thousand years ago. The firing process naturally creates variations in surface colour and texture, giving each antefix its own unique character, just like the originals.
