Nene Valley Cup
Handcrafted Roman Cup – Nene Valley Style
Details
These charming Roman cups are inspired by a popular pottery style produced in the Nene Valley during the Roman occupation of Britain. Recognised for their clean forms and tactile appeal, vessels like this would have added a touch of elegance to any Roman dining table.
This form reflects the blend of practicality and beauty that defined Roman ceramics—used in everyday life, but crafted with care and attention to design. Whether shared over a simple meal or in a more refined setting, cups like these were a staple of the Roman domestic experience.
Materials
Earthenware clay
Dimensions
Height: Approx. 85 mm
Diameter: Approx. 100 mm
Production
This cup has been handmade in Northumberland by Potted History, based on original Roman artefacts. It has been fired to a temperature between 800°C and 1000°C, using techniques closely reflecting those of Roman potters nearly two thousand years ago.
Because these are handmade, smoke-fired items, you may not receive the exact cup photographed—slight variations in colour and surface texture are part of what makes each piece unique.
Health & Safety
Museum-Quality Replica: Made using the tools and techniques that would have been used during the Roman era.
Not food safe: As this is an unglazed earthenware vessel with a naturally porous surface, it will absorb the flavours of anything stored or served in it. While this was a familiar aspect of Roman cooking, it also means the vessel does not meet modern health and safety standards.
For display purposes only: While some choose to use replicas like this for experimental archaeology or reenactment, they do so at their own risk.
In the Roman period, pots were typically heated with contents to over 70°C for at least 10 minutes to kill most harmful bacteria. Temperatures of 100°C or more provided further protection.
If you require a food-safe replica, please contact us to discuss a custom commission.
