Nene Valley Flagon
Handcrafted Roman Jug – Nene Valley Style
Details
These delightful Roman jugs are inspired by a popular pottery style produced in the Nene Valley during the Roman occupation of Britain. Jugs, flagons, and pitchers were everyday items across the Roman Empire—used for collecting, storing, and serving essential liquids like wine, beer, olive oil, and water.
If you were stopping by your local tavern or oil merchant, you’d be expected to bring your own jug, like this one, to have your precious purchase carefully decanted from a large amphora into your own vessel. These functional and elegant pots were a key part of daily life in Roman homes.
Materials
Earthenware clay
Dimensions
Height: Approx. 240 mm
Diameter: Approx. 130 mm
Production
This replica has been handmade in Northumberland by Potted History, inspired directly by original Roman artefacts. It has been wood-fired to between 800°C and 1000°C, using traditional methods that reflect the techniques used nearly two thousand years ago.
Because each pot is individually handmade, you may not receive the exact jug shown in the photograph. Subtle variations in colouring and surface texture occur naturally in the firing process, making each piece entirely unique.
Health & Safety
Museum-Quality Replica: Made using the tools and techniques that would have been used during the Roman era.
Not food safe: This vessel is made from unglazed earthenware, which is naturally porous. Over time, it will absorb flavours, oils, and liquids, just as Roman vessels did. However, this also means it does not meet modern health and safety standards for storing or serving food or drink.
For display purposes only: While some enthusiasts use replicas like this for experimental archaeology, this is done at their own risk.
In Roman times, pots were often heated with their contents to over 70°C for at least 10 minutes to kill harmful bacteria, with 100°C or higher offering even greater protection.
If you require a food-safe version, please contact us to discuss a custom commission.
