New Forest Candle Stick, Roman
Handcrafted Roman Candlestick – Inspired by New Forest Kiln Finds
Details
These decorative Roman candlesticks are inspired by pottery fragments discovered at the Roman kilns of the New Forest, Hampshire—a prolific centre of pottery production during the 3rd century AD.
The site was ideal for pottery making, with a ready supply of fine clay, ample timber for fuel, and access to running water. These natural resources enabled Roman potters to establish a thriving industry, marked by clusters of kilns built and rebuilt over generations. The remains suggest a long-term settlement of skilled craftspeople, working communally to maximise their production and efficiency.
Archaeological investigations at the New Forest kilns have revealed a wealth of Romano-British pottery, from refined tableware such as these elegant candlesticks to coarser domestic kitchenware. The discovery of these vessels provides a glimpse into both the artistry and practicality of Roman life in Britain.
These candlesticks are based on decorative examples found at the site—beautifully shaped, yet perfectly suited to everyday use. A small touch of elegance that would have lit the homes of Roman Britons nearly two millennia ago.
Material
White earthenware with red slip decoration
Dimensions
Height: Approx. 100 mm
Diameter: Approx. 90 mm
Production
As with all our museum-quality replicas, this candlestick has been entirely hand-crafted in Northumberland using natural clay and reproduction tools similar to those used by Roman potters. Each piece is individually made, then fired to replicate the surface texture and colouration of the originals.
Due to the nature of the traditional firing process, variations in finish and tone will occur—making each candlestick truly one of a kind.
