New Forest Candle Stick, Roman
Handcrafted Roman Candlestick – New Forest Kiln Style
Details
This decorative candlestick is based on pottery finds from the Roman kilns of the New Forest, Hampshire—a site that flourished as a major centre of ceramic production in the 3rd century AD.
The New Forest was an ideal location for pottery making. With a reliable supply of high-quality clay, plentiful timber for fuel, and easy access to water, Roman potters established a thriving industry here. Numerous kilns have been uncovered, often in clusters—suggesting the site was used over long periods, with new kilns constructed as older ones broke down.
Excavations have revealed an array of fine Romano-British tableware, as well as more utilitarian kitchen vessels. These candlesticks are inspired by some of the more refined decorative forms uncovered—simple, elegant, and highly functional, providing a glimpse into the domestic life of Roman Britain.
Material
White earthenware with red slip decoration
Dimensions
Height: Approx. 125 mm
Diameter: Approx. 60 mm
Production
This replica candlestick has been handmade in Northumberland by Potted History, using techniques and tools inspired by those of Roman potters. Each piece is formed from natural clay, fired traditionally, and finished by hand to echo the colour, form, and texture of the originals.
Due to the nature of this process, each candlestick is unique, with natural variations in finish resulting from the firing.
