Roman Barbotine Phallic Cup
Handcrafted Replica Roman Flying Phallus Cup
Details
This bold and intriguing drinking cup is a true conversation starter. Depicting flying phalli, this style of pottery was popular in Roman Britain during the third and fourth centuries. The phallus was a powerful symbol of protection and good fortune, representing the deity Fascinus, who was believed to bring luck and ward off evil. The Romans embraced this motif in various forms, from jewellery and amulets to military insignia and, as seen here, drinking vessels.
Perhaps those who drank from this very design hoped for victory in battle, prosperity in business, or simply an extra measure of good fortune with each sip. Whatever the case, this cup embodies the humour, superstition, and artistry of the Roman world.
This magnificent replica is based on a cup excavated in Cambridgeshire, which now resides among the treasures of the British Museum.
The original was produced in the Nene Valley, near modern-day Peterborough, an important pottery centre during the Roman occupation of Britain. This area was well known for its dark colour-coated ware, which was achieved using materials from the Romano-British iron industries. These cups were widely distributed throughout the province of Britannia and are frequently found in military settlements along Hadrian’s Wall.
