Roman Hercules Samian Ware, Dr30
Handcrafted Roman Samian Ware Bowl – Hercules Relief (Dragendorff 30)
Details
There is something unmistakably Roman about the iconic red gloss of Samian Ware. Prized for its rich colour and smooth finish, it was mass-produced in Gaul and shipped across the entire Roman Empire—from the bustling markets of Rome to the distant forts along Hadrian’s Wall.
This beautiful bowl is a faithful replica of a Dragendorff Form 30, one of the most popular shapes of Samian tableware. The original would have been crafted by specialists using finely levigated local clays, carefully moulded, and finished with a lustrous red slip that has become synonymous with Roman refinement.
What sets this piece apart is its decoration—a narrative frieze depicting the great hero Hercules. The son of Zeus and the mortal Alcmene, Hercules was famously tormented by Hera, Zeus’ jealous wife, and spent his life fending off her wrath. His strength, trials, and triumphs made him a symbol of endurance and heroism across the Roman world.
Evidence suggests bowls like this were highly prized personal possessions. Sherds of Samian Ware have been found throughout the empire, and some even bear the names of their owners, scratched into the surface as a mark of pride and possession. These were not mere vessels—they were status symbols.
Materials
Terracotta with red slip finish
Dimensions
Height: Approx. 140 mm
Diameter: Approx. 160 mm
Production
This replica has been handmade in Northumberland by Potted History, based closely on an original artefact. It has been fired between 800°C and 1000°C to emulate ancient production methods. As with original Roman pottery, each piece shows natural variation in colour and texture, making every bowl unique.
The red slip has been carefully applied by hand, just as it would have been by Roman potters working in the great kiln centres of Gaul nearly two thousand years ago.
Health & Safety
Museum-Quality Replica: This piece has been made using tools and techniques that reflect historical Roman craftsmanship.
Not food safe: While finished with a traditional red slip, this vessel remains unglazed and is made from earthenware, which is naturally porous. Over time, it will absorb oils, moisture, and residue from anything it comes into contact with. It does not meet modern health and safety standards for storing or serving food.
For display purposes only: Some enthusiasts use replicas for experimental archaeology or demonstration, but this is done at your own risk.
Ancient use and hygiene: Roman users likely heated food and liquid in their pottery to kill bacteria. Heating to over 70°C for at least 10 minutes would have eliminated most disease-causing organisms, while 100°C or more offered further protection. We do not advise using this replica in that way today.
