Roman Box Flue Tile
Handcrafted Roman Box Flue Tile – Inspired by the British Museum Collection
This replica Roman box flue tile is based on an original held in the British Museum's collection, and offers a rare glimpse into the incredible ingenuity of Roman architecture.
Box flue tiles were a vital component of the hypocaust system, the Roman underfloor heating method that turned bathhouses and villas into warm, comfortable spaces. Set vertically into the walls of heated rooms, these hollow tiles allowed hot air to circulate from beneath the floor, moving up through the walls and radiating warmth throughout the space.
While these tiles often appear decorative, their embossed patterns were not designed to be seen. Instead, these textures were added using a wooden roller, applied to the soft clay before construction. The purpose was entirely functional – the roughened surface allowed plaster or mortar to adhere more securely to the wall once installed.
Despite being hidden from view, these tiles demonstrate the same care and craftsmanship found across much of Roman engineering. Every tile was made by hand, and each embossed design speaks to the practical beauty of Roman architectural design.

As with all of our Museum Quality Replicas, this tile has been made entirely by hand in our Northumberland workshop, using natural clay and authentic Roman-style tools. The tile has been constructed using slab-building methods, with its texture added using a replica wooden roller, just as the original Roman artisans would have done.
Each piece is finished to reflect the look and feel of original Roman building materials, with variations in surface colour and finish adding to its historical authenticity.
