Roman Coventina’s Well Incense Burner - Coventina and Saturn

Roman Coventina’s Well Incense Burner - Coventina and Saturn

Handcrafted Replica Roman Incense Burner - Inspired by Coventina's Well

Details

Step back into the world of ancient Roman rituals with this exquisite handcrafted incense burner, inspired by an extraordinary find at Coventina's Well in Northumberland. Unearthed alongside another incense burner, this replica stands out for its hand-built construction using tile clay, a rare technique for Roman pottery, which typically relied on wheel-throwing or moulding for mass production. The hand-crafted nature of this vessel suggests it may have been created by a tile maker, possibly as a personal or side project during their downtime. Its distinctive palm tree motif hints that the maker may have hailed from warmer climates where palms were native.

This thurible (incense burner) likely served as a portable shrine, used for personal worship. The vessel is adorned with dedications to the Goddess Coventina and Saturn, two significant figures in Roman religious practices. Coventina, a Romano-British goddess of water, wells, and springs, was likely associated with the Roman Goddess Minerva. Her shrine, situated near Hadrian's Wall at Brocolitia, housed a sacred well where votive offerings—including this incense burner—were made by worshippers seeking divine protection.

Located near the Mithraeum (a temple dedicated to Mithras), Coventina's shrine exemplifies the Roman practice of grouping different religious sites. Incense burners like this one were integral to Roman votive rituals, allowing worshippers to offer prayers and gifts to the gods for guidance and protection.

When in use, a lump of burning coal would be placed in the burner's upper bowl, and aromatic herbs or resins—such as frankincense, myrrh, cinnamon, and rosemary—would be added to produce fragrant, smouldering smoke. This ritualistic use of incense was central to Roman religious life.

Dated: 2nd to 3rd century AD

This replica is meticulously based on an artifact housed in the York Museum Collection, originally part of the Clayton Collection, now cared for by English Heritage.

Materials

  • Terracotta clay

Dimensions

  • Approx. 235 mm tall
  • Approx. 220 mm diameter

Production

Each piece in our Museum Quality Replica collection is individually handcrafted from natural clay, using tools and techniques similar to those used by Roman potters in antiquity.
