Unlike most Roman pottery, which was wheel-thrown or moulded for efficiency, this vessel is uniquely hand-built from tile clay. Its handmade nature suggests it may have been crafted by a tile maker, perhaps as a personal project during a quiet moment.

This thurible (incense burner) likely served as a portable shrine for private worship. While the inscriptions on its sides have sparked much debate and intrigue, their meaning remains an unsolved mystery—adding to the enigmatic allure of this ancient artefact. This makes it distinct from the other incense burner found alongside it, whose inscriptions have been deciphered. The mystery of these markings continues to captivate historians and enthusiasts alike.

The original incense burner was discovered at a shrine dedicated to Coventina, a Romano-British goddess associated with water, wells, and springs. Likely an adaptation of the Roman goddess Minerva, Coventina’s worship site was located near Hadrian’s Wall at Brocolitia. Her shrine consisted of a sacred well walled off to contain the overflow from a natural spring. This well was filled with votive offerings, including the incense burner that inspired this replica.

The shrine stands adjacent to a Mithraeum, a temple dedicated to the god Mithras, showcasing the Roman practice of grouping religious sites from various traditions. Incense burners like this one played a vital role in Roman votive rituals, providing worshippers with a means to offer fragrant smoke to the gods in exchange for their favour and protection.

To use the burner, glowing charcoal would be placed in its upper bowl, topped with aromatic resins or herbs such as frankincense, myrrh, cinnamon, or rosemary. These ingredients, often mentioned in historical records, produced the sweet-smelling smoke that was central to Roman worship practices.

This replica is inspired by a piece in the York Museum Collection, originally part of the Clayton Collection, and now cared for by English Heritage.
