Simple yet elegant, this beautiful replica dish has been crafted using the same techniques that Roman potters employed to create Samian Ware dishes nearly 2,000 years ago. The process ensures an authentic look and feel, reflecting the highly refined craftsmanship of Roman pottery.

Samian Ware, also known as terra sigillata, was a highly prized tableware in the Roman world. These dishes were mass-produced in Gaul before being exported across the Empire, where they were used by Roman civilians and soldiers to serve food at mealtimes.

This dish is crafted in the style of Form 18/31, a classic Samian Ware shape used extensively during the Roman period.

Production

Each museum-quality replica is handcrafted using authentic Roman tools and techniques. The dish is made entirely by hand from natural clay, just as the original Roman potters would have done.

Due to the traditional firing process, each piece has unique variations in colour and texture, meaning no two dishes are exactly alike—just as they would have been in antiquity.

This museum-quality replica has been made using traditional Roman methods. As an unglazed and porous vessel, it will absorb liquids and flavours over time, much like original Samian Ware.

• Not food safe: Due to its porous nature, this vessel does not meet modern health and safety standards for food use.
• For display and experimental archaeology purposes only: While some enthusiasts use these replicas for experimental archaeology, doing so is at your own risk.
• The Romans ensured food safety by heating their pots and contents to over 70°C for at least 10 minutes to kill bacteria, with 100°C or higher offering additional protection.
