Satyr Statue
Handcrafted Replica Greek Crouching Satyr Figurine – Inspired by Ancient Offerings
Details
Drinking, dancing, and chasing Nymphs were among the favourite pastimes of Satyrs, the wild and mischievous companions of Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, revelry, and theatre.
These lustful woodland spirits are typically depicted with horse-like ears, tails, and legs, making them instantly recognisable—particularly due to their permanent and exaggerated erections. It's a look that will certainly turn heads!
Their pot-bellied leader, Silenus, the son of Hermes, was a minor deity associated with fertility, drunkenness, and the forest. He was also the tutor of young Dionysus, who clearly learned the art of ecstasy (and perhaps a few drinking games) from him!
This crouching Satyr figurine was originally created for a private lecture at the Corycian Cave, Delphi, a site rich in history and religious rituals. Statues like this were likely left as offerings to the gods, celebrating the wild, untamed spirit of Dionysian revelry.
Materials
- Terracotta with a red slip finish
Dimensions
- Height: Approx. 160 mm
- Width: Approx. 90 mm
- Depth: Approx. 45 mm
Production
Each museum-quality replica is handcrafted using authentic ancient techniques. Just as with the originals, these statues are made by hand-pressing clay into a specially made mould. The figure remains in the mould until it is dry enough to be removed, after which a back is added, and final hand-trimmed details are applied.
The figurine is then fired at temperatures between 800°C and 1000°C, closely replicating ancient Greek pottery techniques. This process naturally results in slight variations in colour and texture, ensuring that each piece is truly unique.
