Anglo-Saxon Urn, Birstall

Anglo-Saxon Urn, Birstall

Handcrafted Replica Wanlip Anglo-Saxon Bowl

Details

This beautiful Anglo-Saxon bowl is a replica of an original artefact unearthed in Wanlip, Leicestershire, during school construction between 1958 and 1960.

The site, often referred to as Bristol, has sparked debate among archaeologists—some believe it was a settlement site, while others argue that it was an inhumation cemetery. What is certain is that the site yielded stunning Anglo-Saxon artefacts, including weapons, jewellery, horse bridles, and pottery, all of which had remained buried for centuries.

This small decorative bowl or urn is dated to the first half of the 6th century and holds particular significance. The stamp used to decorate it has also been identified on a vessel found at an Anglo-Saxon cremation cemetery in Thurmaston, Leicestershire. This remarkable link demonstrates that Anglo-Saxon potters served a broad community, producing distinctive and carefully crafted wares that were widely appreciated.
