Anglo Saxon, Spong Man, Urn Lid

Anglo Saxon, Spong Man, Urn Lid

Handcrafted Replica Spong Figure Urn Lid – Inspired by the 5th-Century Anglo-Saxon Original

Details

This museum-quality replica is inspired by the Spong Figure, a magnificent Anglo-Saxon urn lid from the 5th century AD.

Originally excavated from Spong Hill, North Elmham, in 1979, this remarkable artefact was discovered among thousands of Anglo-Saxon objects. The site is now recognised as Britain's largest known Anglo-Saxon cremation cemetery.

The Spong Figure is one of the most evocative representations of the human form from the entire Anglo-Saxon period. With its contemplative expression and seated posture, this figure has an almost timeless quality, sparking curiosity about the thoughts and intentions of its original maker.

While the urn lid survived, the urn it once sealed has been lost, leaving archaeologists with no clues about the complete vessel it once adorned. It remains one of the most captivating Anglo-Saxon discoveries, showcasing the artistry of early medieval craftsmanship.

Some theories suggest that the Spong Figure may have:

  • Represented the deceased whose remains were placed within the urn.
  • Served as a guardian figure, protecting the occupant in the afterlife.

Whatever its true meaning, this iconic piece of early Anglo-Saxon art continues to fascinate historians and collectors alike.
