Mediaeval Dragon Jug
Handcrafted Medieval Dragon Jug – Inspired by the Wood Quay Excavation, Dublin
Details
This striking jug is inspired by a 13th-century ceramic find uncovered during the Wood Quay excavations in Dublin, carried out by the Museum of Ireland between 1974 and 1976.
The site, situated along the banks of the River Liffey, was originally used as a seasonal raiding camp by Vikings before evolving into a thriving medieval commercial centre. Over time, centuries of activity built up rich archaeological layers, preserved in the waterlogged mud.
Among the many remarkable discoveries was the spout, handle, and upper collar of a fabulous medieval jug—clearly once part of a wheel-thrown vessel, later enhanced with the addition of a mythical beast. In this replica, we've restored the vessel to its full form, complete with a terrifying dragon figure curled around the neck.
Jugs like this would likely have been used in taverns or domestic settings for serving beer or wine. It’s a functional piece with a whimsical twist, embodying the lively imagination of the medieval potter.

Health & Safety
Museum-Quality Replica: Made using authentic historical tools and techniques.
Not food safe: Although this jug is glazed, it is made from earthenware, which is naturally somewhat porous. It may absorb liquids over time and therefore does not meet modern health and safety standards for food use.
For display purposes only: While some enthusiasts use replicas for experimental archaeology, doing so is at your own risk.
Ancient users ensured food safety by heating their pots and contents above 70°C for at least 10 minutes to kill bacteria, with 100°C or higher offering additional protection.
