Medieval Scottish Redware Jug

Medieval Scottish Redware Jug

Handcrafted Scottish Redware Jug – Rounded Base Style

Details

This is a faithful replica of a distinctive Scottish pottery type known as Scottish redware. Characterised by its warm tones and slightly rounded base, this style of jug was as practical as it was charming.

The rounded base was ideal for nestling into an open hearth, likely used to warm ales or ciders on long, cold winter nights. It also made the jug unstable on flat surfaces, which may have encouraged tavern servers to keep it in hand, ready to pour the next pint for their eager punters—keeping the conversation (and the drink) flowing.

Materials
Earthenware with clear glaze

Dimensions
Height: Approx. 240 mm
Width: Approx. 145 mm

Production

This jug has been handmade in Northumberland by Potted History, taking inspiration from original artefacts. It has been wheel-thrown and finished with a clear glaze, enhancing the natural colour and texture of the redware beneath. The shape, finish, and firing techniques closely reflect the traditional Scottish craftsmanship of the originals.

Health & Safety
Museum-Quality Replica: Made using authentic historical tools and techniques.
Not food safe: Although glazed, this vessel is made from earthenware, which remains somewhat porous. It does not meet modern health and safety standards for food or drink use.
For display purposes only: While some enthusiasts use replicas for experimental archaeology, doing so is at your own risk.
Medieval users ensured hygiene and safety by heating their pots and contents above 70°C for at least 10 minutes to kill bacteria, with 100°C or higher offering additional protection.
