Viking Spouted Pitcher, Torksey Style, Large

Viking Spouted Pitcher, Torksey Style, Large

Handcrafted Replica Viking Torksey Ware Pitcher

Details

When you think of the Vikings, images of marauding warships and fierce battles often come to mind. But beyond their fearsome reputation, many Vikings chose to settle in the British Isles, establishing farms, communities, and trade networks. Their arrival transformed everyday life, bringing back the potter’s wheel and mass production of pottery—an innovation Britain had not seen since the Roman era.

One of the most fascinating insights into this period comes from excavations at Torksey, Lincolnshire, where archaeologists uncovered a vast Viking winter camp. Among the remains of daily life were fragments of distinctive pottery, now known as Torksey Ware. These pots, practical yet beautiful, would have been used in Viking households for everything from storing food to brewing ale.

This museum-quality replica captures the hallmarks of Torksey Ware, including its bold, ribbed decoration, achieved by applying strips of clay to the pot’s surface and then pressing dimples into the clay by hand. Each pinch left behind the potter’s fingerprints, a trace of its maker that, in the case of the original vessels, has survived for centuries.

Through this technique, every pot became a personal statement of the artisan’s skill, an imprint of the past that connects us directly to the craftspeople who shaped Viking Britain.

Materials

  • Grogged earthenware, reduction fired

Dimensions

  • Height: Approx. 230 mm
  • Diameter: Approx. 235 mm

Production

As with all our Museum Quality Replicas, this vessel has been crafted entirely by hand in Northumberland by Potted History, based on an original artefact.

  • Wheel-thrown, just as Viking potters would have made it over a thousand years ago.
  • The rich, smoky colouring comes from reduction firing, an ancient technique that starves the kiln of oxygen, creating the darkened surface tones found on original Torksey Ware.

Health & Safety

This is a Museum Quality Replica, made using the tools and techniques that Viking potters would have used in the early medieval period.

  • Like the original, this vessel is not glazed, meaning the surface remains porous. Over time, it will absorb moisture and develop a natural patina, much like the historic pots that inspired it.
  • As a result, it does not meet modern food safety standards, and we do not recommend using this pot for storing, serving, or consuming food or drink.
  • If exposed to liquids, the unglazed surface will absorb moisture, which may lead to discolouration over time.
  • For display purposes only – while this piece is an authentic and historically accurate replica, it is intended as a decorative artefact rather than a functional vessel.
